Year 7 Lessons - Term 2

( if you miss the lesson for any reason you should still complete both classwork and homework)

(***note that some classes are still to complete Term 1 Lesson 13 work - specifically the ‘Artists’ Drawing Test’)

Lesson 1

Classwork : Students may be asked to complete the Drawing Unit self assessment label at the beginning of this lesson.

On the paper provided (see picture below), students draw a triangle (side should be about 5cm) and a ‘splodge’ shape. Then paint the triangle ‘ultramarine blue’ and the slodge ‘vermilion red’. Students should only make one attempt at this first painting exercise.

Students then watch the video below and use the skills described to paint a perfect triangle and ‘splodge’ for homework. Make as many attempts as needed and your supply of paper allows.

First Shape Painting Demonstration

Homework : Paint a perfect triangle and ‘splodge’. Remember the triangle is ‘ultramarine blue’ and the slodge ‘vermilion red’. Students need to bring in their paints and brushes.

NOTE: Students must then submit your first painting triangle and ‘splodge' painting and also their best. Also include a list of the ‘Top Tips’ for painting and an explanation of the improvements and skills used in painting the best triangle and ‘splodge' painting. See the picture below for how the work must be presented.

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 2

Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 1’ video below and then paint the two blue sections. Students have already been given this paper. Don’t forget to test and practice painting on scrap paper before painting these two blue sections.

Colour Mixing 1 - Blue Sections

Homework : Students should watch the ‘Colour Mixing 2’ video below and then paint the two green sections. Remember you are not allowed to use green but must mix the colours as demonstrated in the video. Don’t forget to test and practice painting on scrap paper before painting these two green sections.

Colour Mixing 2 - Green Sections

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 3

Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 3’ video below and then paint the blended the blue and green sections as shown. Remember you are not allowed to use green but must mix the colours as demonstrated in the video. Don’t forget to test and practice painting and blending on scrap paper before painting these two sections.

Colour Mixing 3 - Blending Blue and Green Sections

Homework : Complete painting blended the blue and green sections as shown in the video above. Also complete with the van Gogh drawing copy if you have not done so already (this is the final opportunity to complete the drawing).

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 4

Classwork : Students watch the ‘Colour Mixing 4’ video below and then paint the long blended strip of colours. Use the colours exactly as shown in the video. Lesson 5

Classwork : For Lesson 4 the ‘Artists’ Colour Handout’ should be stuck in sketchbooks after the painting exercise sheet shown in Lesson 3.

Students watch the ‘Artists Colour Slide Show’ video below and make notes on the handout about the different artists (as they did previously for the ‘Artists Drawings Slide Show). For the remainder of the lesson students can start the homework which is to copy the Lucian Freud’s ‘Girl with a Leaf’ or Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Walrus’ drawing.

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 6

Classwork : Firstly students are given two Teddy Bear Still Life pictures and tracing paper. They should then watch the ‘Still Life - Selecting and tracing the best composition’ video below and trace the composition they wish to paint. Use a telescopic pencil, ruler, and accurate measurements. Remember to work lightly as you only have one piece of tracing paper.

The only difference this year is that students will select their best composition to trace using the 9cm x 14cm rectangle drawn on the tracing paper (we will not be issuing the transparent windows). Any students completing the tracing before the end of the lesson can continue to copy the second artists drawing.

Still Life - Selecting and tracing the best composition

Homework : Students should complete the tracing. Sketchbook will be completed this lesson or next lesson in readiness for writing Year 7 reports.

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 7

Classwork : Students use watercolour painting paper for the still life enlargement. They should then watch the ‘Still Life - Enlarging Using a Grid’ video and start the gridded enlargement as describe in the video. Remember to work lightly so that any mistakes can be erased and pencil lines do do show through after the work is painted.

Still Life - Enlarging Using a Grid

Homework : Complete the still-life gridded enlargement drawing in readiness for starting to paint next lesson. Also bring in paints and brushes.

Note: If sketchbook have been collected for marking, student will be given time to complete the still-life gridded enlargement drawing next lesson.

Lesson 8

In the lesson students will be asked to paint only one of the objects for your still-life painting. The objects must be painted in the following order (so if you don’t have the egg cup you should start with the beaker). You must show the practice painting as well as the final painted object.

  1. egg cup

  2. beaker

  3. milk jug

  4. lemon

  5. orange

Before starting to paint students should watch the relevant demonstration video below.

Egg Cup and Beaker Demonstration Painting

Milk Jug Lemon and Orange Demonstration Painting

Each object will have a practice painting and test colour sheets before you start on the actual painting. They will look like the examples below.

Homework : Complete painting the first object for your still-life painting.

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 9

Classwork : Students now should paint the second object for the still-life painting. Remember that the objects must be painted in the following order (so if you started with the egg cup but don’t have the beaker, you should practice and paint the milk jug next). The demonstration videos are shown above in Lesson 6.

  1. egg cup

  2. beaker

  3. milk jug

  4. lemon

  5. orange

It is important that you show the practice painting as well as the painted objects in the final painting. However you do not need to totally complete the practice paintings, but you must demonstrate the skills needed before you paint the final object. You may need to produce more than one practice painting for each object.

Homework : Complete painting the second object for your still-life painting.

Deadline : The deadline will always be your next Art lesson unless stated otherwise on MILK.

Lesson 10

Classwork : Student should paint the third object for the still-life painting.

***NOTE if you do not have a third object from the list you should practice and paint part of one of the following items (Glass with Flowers, Lizard or Wine Glass). See the video demonstrations below.

Glass with Flowers Demonstration Painting
Lizard Demonstration Painting
Wine Glass Demonstration Painting

Homework : Complete painting the third object for your still-life painting.
