Year 12 - Major Y12 Project

Week 1

Work Set : This project will last just over a term and will normally be completed the first week after the Easter break.

During this first week the Foundations Course 3 - Major Y12 Project will be discussed. The format of this project will be very similar to that of a GCSE project (Initial Preparatory Work, Artists’ Research, Development and a Final Piece), but will also include new ways of working, presenting ideas, and research as outlined during the first two Foundation projects.

Work Produced:

  • Two or three pieces of initial preparatory work (including photography) and associated sketchbook work

  • Artists’ research and investigations including copies of paintings

  • One or two pieces of development work and associated sketchbook work

  • Final art work and associated sketchbook work

Example projects can be seen below.

3 possible starting points for the ‘Y12 Major Project’ are also shown below:

These were originally Foundation course projects but can easily form the basis of the ‘Y12 Major Project’ and encourage students to work in exciting ways. Students

1 - systems of abstraction

Students investigate systems of abstraction. They investigate the painting abstraction techniques adopted by a variety of artists and develop work on a theme of their choice.

2 - confident marks

Students look to develop more confident and expressive painting. They investigate the painting techniques adopted by a variety of artists and develop work on a theme of their choice. Note that the ‘Yr 12 Main Project - Example 2’ above, stems from this confident marks starting point.

3 - drips & splashes

Students again look to develop more expressive and loose ways of painting. They investigate the painting techniques adopted by a wide variety of artists and develop work on a theme of their choice. Note that the ‘Yr 12 Main Project - Example 1’ above, stems from this drips & splashes starting point.
