Year 10 GCSE Project 2 - Own Choice Project

***Photography work will be will be set on CLASSCHARTS and emailed directly to the student***

Week 1

Work Set : For GCSE Project 2 students have a ‘Free Choice’ project. There is also a wide selection of exemplar projects, from all genres of art and photography. These can often help provide an inspiring starting point for students. These have been split in Landscape, Cityscape, Landscape, Animals, Mixed Media, and Portraiture. The work produced will follow the same format as Project 1. Thus again the four assessment objectives and project components are;

·       Initial Preparatory work

·       Artists’ research and investigations

·       Development

·       Final art work

In the first two lessons students investigate project examples. There are video examples of each genre of project, as well as Pinterest examples of Final Artworks produced by previous students. Click on the button below to access the video example (remember Pinterest can only be accessed from home).

For homework students will need to to make a final decision on the subject of the project, and also collect photographs in order to start the initial drawing work.

Deadline : The deadline will always be set on CLASSCHARTS.

Week 2

Work Set (Initial Prep Drawing Work WEEK 1 of 2) : Over the next 6 weeks students will complete Initial Preparatory Work (both sketchbook and black sheet exhibition work) in Pencil, Paint and a material of their own choice (2 weeks for each).

Over the next 2 weeks students complete 2 sketchbook pages of drawing and ‘own project’ research work (normally in class), and also a pencil drawing for the black sheet exhibition work (normally at home).

Students start each week discussing Initial Preparatory Work produced in exemplar projects, both the two shown below, and examples presented in class.

The first example is a Cityscape Project (play video from 20sec - 1min 50sec). The student has quite a loose way of working. Simple colour painted backgrounds are added to the sketchbook pages and a wide variety of information is presented. There is artwork on each double page (plus fap-outs), a good selection of pictures, and excellent annotations. Written work is presented on yellow and white pieces of paper, but these is also printed information and additional annotation written directly onto the sketchbook pages.

GCSE Cityscape Project

The second example is a Mixed Media Project based on Sea Life and Pollution in the Sea (play video from 18sec - 2min 50sec). The student has a very organised way of working. A flat black acrylic painted background is added to the sketchbook pages and a wide variety of information is presented. There is high quality artwork on each double page (plus fap-outs), a good selection of pictures, and very ordered annotations. Written work is presented mostly in white gel pen, but there is additional typed comments on watercolour paper that have a wash of colour added. The first example sketchbook is much looser, but both students have a particular style and are able to demonstrate to the examiner they have a confident and distinctive way of presenting Initial Preparatory work.

GCSE Mixed Media Project

Below also, are the sketchbook example from the first Still-Life Project.

Deadline : The deadline will always be set on CLASSCHARTS.

Week 3

Work Set (Initial Prep Drawing Work WEEK 2 of 2) : Students need to continue to work on the 2 sketchbook pages of drawing and ‘own project’ research work, and also a pencil drawing for the black sheet exhibition work .

Students again start each week discussing Initial Preparatory Work produced in exemplar projects, both the two shown below, and examples presented in class.

This week the first example is a Portrait Project (play video from 20sec - 1min 57sec). The student has a very loose way of working. Sketchbook pages have been lined with black sugar paper (rather than painted). There is extensive artwork on each page (plus fap-outs), a good selection of pictures, and excellent annotations. Written work is presented in white gel pen, and fine liner on tracing paper. All work has ‘ripped’ edges to create a scrapbook-like effect, but the particular strength of this work is the extensive artwork.

GCSE Portrait Project Example 2

The second example is an Animal Project (play video from 22sec - 1min 57sec). Sketchbook pages have been prepared with a watercolour wash . There is good quality artwork on each page, but a limited selection of pictures, and also some unused space on the sketchbook pages. Written work is well presented, but again this is limited to describing the techniques used, but no information is provided about the animals, and how they fit in to the project narrative.

GCSE Animal Project Example 1

Deadline : The deadline will always be set on CLASSCHARTS.

Week 4

Work Set (Initial Prep Painting Work WEEK 1 of 2) : Over the next 2 weeks students complete 2 sketchbook pages of painting and ‘own project’ research work (normally in class), and also a painting for the black sheet exhibition work (normally at home).

Students again start this week discussing Initial Preparatory Work produced in exemplar projects, both the two shown below, and examples presented in class.

This week the first example is a Portrait Project (play video from 20sec - 2min 55sec) and achieves full marks. The student has a very ordered and detailed way of working. Sketchbook pages have been prepared using a distinctive theme of black and red acrylic. There is extensive artwork and commentary on each page (plus fap-outs), a good selection of pictures, and excellent annotations. Written work, in white gel pen, works well on the black and red background colours, but the stand-out feature of this project must be the exceptional quality of the artwork.

GCSE Portrait Project Example 4

The second example is a Landscape/Seascape Project (play video from 20sec - 2min 40sec). Sketchbook pages have been prepared using a distinctive theme of black and red acrylic. There is good quality artwork on each page, great quality photographs (from both primary and secondary sources), and interesting use of flap-outs. Written work is well presented and extensive, and the white gel pen works well on the black and red background colours.
